Many km In A Few Days

Friday July 3 - end of day and I've driven about 700 km since arriving on The Rock. But with the construction slow downs it feels like more. The scenery on the west side of Newfoundland is stunning. Just breath taking. It's much easier to be in stop and go traffic when that's what you're looking at.

Corner Brook. Just a stop to have lunch and drive through the city a bit. It’s very pretty and as you drive north you see this view from the Trans Canada. A city on a side hill. It’s quite striking. This mountain range which runs from Cape Ray in the south west right up the Great Northern Peninsula, is called The Long Range Mountains (northern end of the Appellations and is a 450 km system). The highest mountain is the Cabox which is just a bit south of Corner Brook and reaches an elevation 2664 feet.

My destination for July 1 was Springdale. On a beautiful ocean bay. Happy Canada Day. I didn't have plans to sightsee during these 2 days as the purpose was to get to Gander by July 2 mid afternoon to meet up with Brooke and Jamie.

Brook took me to see Come From Away (Mother’s Day Gift). It was amazing. This year is the 25th anniversary of 911 so they wanted to have the show back in Gander. It was amazing. Some new additions to the script from the one I saw streamed on TV but they were really clever and funny. So powerful

July 3. I decided I should spend some time in Glovertown

The area is known as Alexander Bay Area now.

Very helpful staff here and a public washroom always at hand!

Just a fairly normal tourist town gearing up for their summer. They have a  picturesque dog park and walking trail and lots of designated sitting areas to enjoy the water views.

Glovertown was a forestry hub in the late 19th century which brought the railway to their community. Then in the 1940s and 50s communities from the  Bonavista Islands migrated and were resettled in Glovertown. The economy was driven by this influx and the Town was incorporated in 1954. That's probably not as interesting to you as it was to me. 😊

I spent that night in Fern the Van again. But a bit different as I was sort of in the wilderness.  Up on a hill in a horse pasture where there are no horses (or people). Kind of like boondocking except I was only minutes from civilization. So peaceful and beautiful. The owner did meet me and checked on me again about 8:30 pm when she warned me that it is a coyote, bear and moose area, however, in 30 years she hadn't seen either bear or moose. Kismet and I stayed inside after her final constitutional about 9! I would have liked to see them through the window though but didn't.

July 4.  A terrible accident on the Trans Canada Highway stopped me from getting to my destination for today. Both lanes were closed from 7:30 am. It still wasn't cleared by 4 so I checked into a room and will continue tomorrow. So sad to think of the loss. I was delayed but I'm here.
I was to spend the next 2 nights with a friend on the Avalon Peninsula at Western Bay. There will be a lot to be crammed into the day tomorrow.
Until then
